Strengthen Cybersecurity: Tips for Creating Strong Passwords

Don’t take passwords for granted! A strong password is the first line of defense against hackers online. However, sometimes many users have to reset their passwords because they forgot their previous password. In fact, the forgotten password is already a strong password.

So, what are the easy steps to create a simple password that you can memorize out of your head? Let’s check out some tips below!

Turn sentences into passwords

Cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier in 2008 suggested an easy method to create a password that is both memorable and secure.

First, choose a memorable sentence that is easy for you to remember. You can create your own sentence or take it from movie quotes, song lyrics, proverbs, etc.

Then, assign for each word, a set of characters to help you remember it. Don’t forget to add special characters to make your password more unique.

Example:

Mrs. Budi went to the market to buy corn and nano-nano = 1BpkPm7&N2!

Putri’s father doesn’t like to eat catfish because it is fishy = 4Pt5m1Lka!

The color of the rainbow is me ji ku hi bi ni u = WpaM37Kh8nU?

Use online password generator software or services

When you don’t have enough time to come up with a strong password, or you’ve run out of ideas because you’ve done it dozens of times this month, it’s time to rely on a password maker. Make sure the track record of the password maker is good so that you feel safe when using it.

Turn on multi-factor authentication

The MFA feature is very helpful to prevent your accounts from falling into the hands of irresponsible people. MFA requires users to provide at least two pieces of evidence to prove that the person accessing is the real user.

The two proofs include the first proof of entering a password. Then, the second proof is followed by answering a security question or entering a token sent to the user’s device.

While not perfect, MFA and 2FA will stop most cybercrime attempts. Attackers who are serious about breaking into specific accounts may still find other ways to bypass security.

Choose a random string of words

Hackers always have a motive, not just hacking for no reason. Of the many motives they have, 71% of them are financially motivated. Cybercriminals are mostly looking to access bank accounts and credit cards.

To be more secure, protect important accounts like bank accounts with a random string of words – also known as a passphrase. A passphrase is a string of words to control access to a system, application or data, which is longer than a password and has spaces.

Use the Electrum method

The Electrum method manages Bitcoin wallets and requires a 12-word seed to access your Bitcoin address. You can use the same approach to create a truly secure password for your account by using 100% random words. Then, use a password checker to test whether your password can withstand a brute force attack.

Use the PAO method

PAO or Person-Action-Object System is a popular memorization method that includes a long string of numbers. You need to assign a two-digit number to a person, action, or object.

Use the Phonetic Muscle Memory method

How: access a password generator site. Then, create 20 new passwords that are at least 10 characters long, including numbers and capital letters (as well as punctuation for extra security). Then, scan the passwords to find their phonetic structure. Choose passwords that you can recite in your head.

For example: RS4L3GytLZ = Delicious Legit Flavors

Tb4AS7MS1u = Slash Seven Gunpowder

citr41HaTI = Citra Satu Hati

Well, those are some tips for creating a strong password so that it is not easily broken into by hackers. Don’t forget your own password!
